Mr. Ian Laird
Ian Laird is a Special Legal Consultant in the International Dispute Resolution Group based in Crowell & Moring's Washington, D.C. office. He is also licensed to practice as a Barrister & Solicitor in Ontario, Canada. His practice is focused in the field of international investment law and arbitration. Ian has spoken extensively and published numerous articles on international investment arbitration, and serves as Editor-in-Chief of InvestmentClaims.com, an on-line investment arbitration award service published by Oxford University Press due for launch in autumn 2007.
Ian has been counsel in some of the leading investment arbitrations submitted under the NAFTA Chapter 11 investor-state provisions in matters related to the Canada-US softwood lumber dispute, the export of PCBs to the United States, the express courier service industry, and the export of bulk water. He has experience advising clients on issues related to bilateral and multilateral international agreements, such as the WTO Agreement, the NAFTA and Bilateral Investment Agreements. He has provided advice to major corporations, associations, governments, and non-government organizations concerning international trade and investment law as it relates to the environment, health, forestry, energy, pharmaceutical, patents, cross- border trade in services, culture, competition policy, monopolies and state enterprises.
